Hysteria

I talk about why I start this series on one of my lastest posts, Forest-Green Fire, if you would like to learn a little bit about Asperger's Syndrome, click here.

This week's inspiration is Stanley Kubrick, one of the greatest filmmakers in cinematic history. Apart from his film career, as american director, producer, screenwriter, and photographer, Kubrick was thought to possibly be located on the autism spectrum because of his reclusive nature and his habit of hoarding animals. Whether he did or did not have Aspergers, there is no doubt that he created many innovative and exceedingly creative films, which encompassed extremely unique characters, such as: Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and A Clockwork Orange.

A Clockwork Orange was based on Anthony Burgess's novel with the same name and it deals with very disturbing and violent images which emphasize the commentary on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency and other social, economic and political dialogues in a dystopian near-future Britain.

Alex, a charismatic, antisocial young man interested in committing rape, theft and "ultra-violence," in relation to classical music, is the main character of this film and what interests me the most about him is the idea that his nature is evil, something that has to be cured, an illness to be "cured" with psychiatry.

French physician Jean-Martin Charcot is one of the most important personalities in the relationship between psychology and physiology. He studied "hysteria" between the 1860s and 1870s. "Hysteria" was a term used to describe extreme emotional behavior in women due to possible problems with the uterus (Greek word: hystera).

By observing thousands of these cases, Charcot defined "The Laws of Hysteria," claiming that it was a lifelong, inherited condition triggered by shock and treated via hypnotism. Just like that, "Hysteria" became the first condition described by Freud in his theory of psychoanalysis and one of the first conditions related to a physical disease which warranted a search for a biological cause and a therefore a "cure".

Psychology interests me so much, it's such a complex concept, that of the human mind, and I just wonder, will the nature vs. nurture debate ever end? Will we ever know enough to correctly make a matter of our psychology universal?
